Chanda Chevannes

Chanda Chevannes is passionate about creating more joy and justice in our world with documentary film.

Currently the Executive Producer of the National Film Board of Canada’s Central Documentary Unit, Chanda is responsible for the work of a team of 12 production professionals who collaborate with directors and co-producers in Manitoba, Nunavut, and Ontario.

Since joining the NFB in 2022, Chanda has served as the executive producer on approximately thirty documentary projects, including Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story, Sounds & Pressure: Reggae in a Foreign Land, The Nest, and Parade: Queer Acts of Love and Resistance, which was the celebrated Opening Night film at Hot Docs in 2025.

Prior to joining the NFB, Chanda worked for two decades as an independent filmmaker, writer, and educator. She produced and directed 14 films, including the award-winning features UNFRACTURED and Living Downstream; and produced or production managed 25 other docs. The films she directed have been broadcast on six continents, have been viewed by approximately 4 million people, and have contributed to tangible legislative and social change.

As a writer and an educator, Chanda has sought to share what she has learned with – and on behalf of – the international community of documentary filmmakers. Grounded in a commitment to authenticity, access, and accountability, Chanda has written 15 documentary-focused publications and trained over 800 emerging film professionals.

Chanda is a mother and a queer woman of colour – identities that inform her work.
